"The ambiguity function is derived and its properties useful to radar waveform analysis are investigated. Synthesis of the phase-modulated waveform whose ambiguity function is the minimum mean-square estimate of some desired ambiguity function is accomplished by expanding the phase modulation function in an orthogonal series. The ambiguity function, defined as a magnitude, and the value of an arbitrary cost functional defined on the ([tau],w[subscript d]) plane is then expressed in terms of the coefficients of the orthogonal series. thus, the "optimum" waveform can be determined by solving the variational equations for the coefficients. Numerical examples are presented for the case where it is desired to minimize the mean-square difference of a desired ambiguity function, X([tau],w[subscript d]), for some region of the ([tau],w[subscript d]) plane"--Abstract, leaf ii. |
