| Summary |
"For some time there has been a need for a wind tunnel at the School of Mines for experimental work in the Civil and Mechanical Engineering Departments. With the expanding program and the possibility of establishing an Aeronautical Engineering School here, the need will be even more pronounced. So the problem will be of definite practical value. It was the original idea to design a small tunnel, build the tunnel, and to run a series of smoke tests on various structural models. However, after discussing the possibility of such a problem with school authorities, it was decided that if a tunnel was to be built it should be of such design and construction that it would be of permanent asset to the school's facilities. The complete detailed design of such a tunnel is ample material for a thesis problem...Further consultation with interested faculty members in civil and Mechanical Engineering resulted in determination of the desired maximum speed of the tunnel and size of test section. With this, then, as the starting point, the thesis was broken into a series of smaller parts, each of which will constitute a section or chapter of this thesis. The individual parts which will be considered are as follows: "Choosing Overall Dimensions", "Power Supply", "Damping Screens and Settling Chamber", "Balance System Design", "Design of Entrance and Exit Sections", "Design of Guide Vanes", "Measuring Devices", "Materials of Construction", "Cost Estimate".
