Summary "Although many of the shales and clays of Missouri have in the past been, or are presently being used for the manufacture of heavy clay products such as face brick, common brick, sewer pipe, and tile, there is in these post-war years a significant shortage of these products within the state and country. Especially in the northwestern part of Missouri is there a distinct shortage, as only one structural clay plant is known to be operating in that area. The St. Louis and Southeastern Missouri districts are better prepared to meet construction demands, with several structural clay plants operating at peak capacity in these areas. An investigation of the ceramic possibilities of some of the shales and clays of Northwest and Southeast Missouri would serve to indicate whether the manufacture of structural clay products such as common and face brick, tile and sewer pipe, could be accomplished"--Introduction, leaf 1.
