"This thesis has been prepared to make available basic information on the use of the oxidation products of pyrrhotite to cement hydraulic tailing stope fill. As nothing has been published on this subject to date, a review has been made of pertinent information culled from accounts of work in related fields. From this study, a set of equations representing the most likely pyrrhotite oxidation reactions has been evolved and tests supporting these equations performed. Samples of fill, each containing from one to six percent of pyrrhotite, were cemented in the laboratory. They were then examined microscopically, subjected to unconfined compressive strength tests and assayed. Bonding of these samples is shown to be effected by a matrix of iron oxides mixed with iron sulphates. The main factors governing the strength of the final cemented fill are shown to be: the quantity of pyrrhotite oxidized, the stage to which its iron oxides hydrate and the particle size distribution and chemical composition of the tailing"--Abstract, leaf ii. |
