Summary "There is at the present time no commercially developed source of the metal rhenium in the United States. Since this metal is known to exist in molybdenite, it was felt that a study of the products of the metallurgical processing of this mineral might reveal a source of rhenium that could e developed. The Climax Molybdenum Co. provided a number of samples from their smelter at Langloth, Pennsylvania. Although an improved method for the quantitative estimation of rhenium was recently published, its accuracy was not high and the procedure exacting and time-consuming. These combined factors led to the selection of this subject as a research problem. The object of the investigation was to study the steps in the Hiskey and Meloche method for the quantitative estimation of rhenium, to improve its accuracy in so far as possible, and to apply the method in analyzing industrial products obtained in the metallurgical processing of molybdenite concentrate for their rhenium content. In this way the points at which this element accumulates might be determined. It was hoped that a rhenium balance could be calculated for the plant. This project did not materialize due to lack of information as well as changes in the process made necessary in meeting the needs of increased production"--Introduction, leaves 1-2.
