Summary "The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of clay and water on the viscosity and yield stress of a mass flow. Mass flows were simulated in a rotating, circular flume. The mass flow matrices were synthesized from gravel, sand, silt, bentonite, kaolinite, and water. Viscosity and yield stress were calculated by using the Bingham model as the basis for computations. The results showed that the viscosity decreased for an increase in clay concentration or water content. The yield stress did not consistently increase nor decrease for an increase in clay concentration or water content. The lack of a consistent trend for changes in yield stress relative to changing clay concentrations and water contents was probably attributable to a non-linear relation between stress and rate of strain for low rates of strain"--Abstract, leaf iii.
