"The moisture characteristic and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity of 85 % sand 15 % bentonite mix were investigated in this study. The physical properties of the sand bentonite mix were determined by the standard soil mechanics tests. Test specimens were compacted dry of optimum. Thermocouple psychrometers were used to measure soil suction. Hysteresis in the suction-moisture characteristic curve was investigated. A measurable distinction was observed between the primary wetting and primary drying curves. The unsaturated hydraulic conductivity was determined using a variation of the instantaneous profile method. The unsaturated hydraulic conductivity from degrees of saturation from 34 percent to complete saturation was found to vary by about three orders of magnitude. The experimental results were compared to output from a computer program called RETC, with good agreement"--Abstract, leaf iii. |
