| Summary |
"Press tools are widely used to manufacture sheet metal parts for various applications ranging from aerospace and automotive parts to high precision parts for watches. The design of press tools and its manufacturing functions are highly specialized and knowledge-intensive in nature. The sheet metal tooling industry characterized by many small-scale job-shops is facing an ever increasing challenge to be competitive in the market. This comes at a time when there is a shortage of experienced process planners, and unavailability of any affordable CAD/CAM systems which could provide an integrated manufacturing solutions for sheet metal tooling. Many of the commercially available CAD/CAM systems are narrow in scope providing only point solutions. This thesis presents the development and implementation of an integrated manufacturing system for a local company specializing in precision punches and dies. The system consists of two main modules, viz., variant and generative modules which are then further classified into various sub modules. Based on customer orders, the designer can use the integrated system to create CAD models of punches/dies, automatically generate GT codes, process plans, NC part programs, and manufacturing cost estimates.
