Summary "Scale-up of stirred tank reactors for multiple reaction systems can cause tremendous yield effects if proper techniques are not employed. This research explores the effect of mixing on stirred tank, competitive-consecutive reactions. Many variables were examined, including scale-up technique, feed location, impeller type, and temperature dependence, for both continuous and semi-batch systems. The scale-up techniques implemented in this research were constant impeller tip speed and constant power per unit volume. The tank sizes investigated were 0.785, 3785, and 6280 liters. For each scale-up technique, a definite decrease in yield is exhibited when the vessel size is increased from the bench scale to the production scale. If the system is exothermic and temperature dependent, this yield decrease is more dramatic"--Abstract, page iii.
