Summary "The Cape sites are close to the continent and are very useful in detecting upwelling signals and clues to changes in continental climate (pollen, clay minerals, and terrigenous silt) and in sea level. In this study, samples were obtained from Hole 1085A, 0186A and 1087C in order to use palynomorphs (mainly dinoflagellate cysts) and palynodebris (and the associated palynofacies assemblages) to: (1) Detect the paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic changes in the Cape Basin; (2) characterize the Benguela upwelling system; and (3) detect the Late Miocene carbonate crash (i.e. the depletion of carbonate material in marine sediments) which has been reported from other southern oceans."--Introduction, p. 2.
