Summary "MR SAT is a multi-disciplinary tethered-satellite project initiated July, 2002 at the University of Missouri-Rolla. One of the main aims of the project is to validate the formation flight of two satellites (MR and MRS SAT) connected by a short tether which is deployed to ten meters. The tether reeling mechanism is an important aspect of any tethered satellite mission. When a tether is deployed in space, there is a possibility that the tether end mass might snap back if the final velocity is not zero. This thesis discusses various design issues of the tether material and the mathematical modeling of the tether reeling mechanism of the BR SAT mathematicalathermatical model of the motor-controlled reeling mechanism has been developed which provides the required control action to deploy the sub-satellite to the required final states"--Abstract, leaf iii.
