"In this thesis, a new busy tone based multiple access control (MAC) scheme, BTMA-NTS (Busy Tone Multiple Access with Explicit Denial of Request), is proposed for wireless networks. This scheme uses a separate narrow-band receiver busy tone channel to acknowledge the receiving of an RTS (Request-To-Send) packet, and explicit denial of channel request NTS (Not-To-Send) packet to deny a channel request when necessary. The new scheme effectively addresses both the hidden terminal problem and the exposed terminal problem. The receiver keeps sending a busy tone until the data packet is completely received, which mitigates the hidden terminal problem greatly. The use of NTS further reduces the hidden terminal problem beyond what the busy tone alone fails to solve. The exposed node with refrain from channel access only during the transmission of control packets"--Abstract, leaf iii. |
