Summary "Microstructure, properties, processing and performance are mutually dependant factors that affect the end properties of any material. Materials are being designed in an intelligent manner through conscious tailoring of the microstructure to achieve desired properties and performance expected of any material. This is the motivating concept for the work undertaken as described in this thesis. The first two papers involve the incorporation of smart materials like BaTiO₃ and NiTi in an aluminum 1100 matrix and prepare composites utilizing friction stir processing. The aim has been to synergize the smart responses of these particles with inherent properties of aluminum 1100 to achieve improved mechanical properties. The first paper is related to incorporation of micro and nano sized powders of BaTiO₃ in aluminum 1100 to utilize the piezoelectric effect while the second paper aims to utilize shape memory effect to improve mechanical properties of the matrix. The microstructure-property correlations in these composites have been studied utilizing various characterizations tools and some of the mechanical properties have been modeled and validated. The third paper involved preparation of databases and analysis of structure-property correlations in high-strength aluminum alloys Al 7050 and A1 7055. Models for mechanical properties and fracture toughness have been validated and areas of optimum properties for these alloys have been mapped out.
