Summary "Research was first conducted on the performance-enhancing potential of flow-field modification via upstream energy deposition for aerospace vehicles in high-speed flow using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). It was shown that significant reductions in both external drag and propellant mass flow rate requirements (i.e. overall power requirements) for vehicle configurations in cruise can be realized using such techniques...A second part of this investigation developed entropic (2nd law-based) analysis for force-based performance evaluation of entire vehicle configurations. Such a methodology allowed for the correct implementation of a common 'currency' of loss evaluation and incorporates vehicle wake issues"--Abstract, leaf iii.
