"Requirement of high-speed data transmission has led to a rising interest in the gigahertz region and has prompted research for dielectric material parameters. As system clock frequencies and rise times increase, signal integrity design considerations are becoming ever more important. High-frequency effects such as dielectric losses, dispersion and skin-effect losses need to be considered. For ensuring signal integrity, it is important to characterize losses of printed circuit board (PCB) dielectrics. In this work, an analytical technique to extract the dielectric properties of a single ended stripline transmission medium is described. This extraction procedure is refined and nearly fifty test materials are studied. A standard measurement protocol is developed. Results are analyzed and documented. At microscopic scale, no surface is smooth in real world. Almost every conducting material shows some kind of surface roughness in terms of peaks and valleys on the surface. Existing commercial software tools do not allow users to model the surface roughness of the substrates accurately. In this work, an analytical model to calculate the losses due to the roughness of the conductor surface is proposed. Results by considering the roughness are analyzed and compared with the results obtained without considering the roughness. The dielectric constant and loss tangent values of a PCB can be predicted, if the resin content percentage is known. In this work, a function is retrieved from the experimental study of numerous test boards whose resin contents are varied in a wide range.
