Summary "Analysis of geochemistry, mineralogy, total organic content (TOC) and rock evaluation pyrolysis on Woodford Shale well cuttings taken from a horizontal well (Quaid 13-30H) drilled in the Arkoma Basin (Pittsburg County), Oklahoma shows no significant variation in the thermal maturity, type, and/or quantity of organic matter. This is interpreted to mean that the organic matter of the Woodford Shale is relatively homogeneous and has all undergone similar thermal history. In addition, the analysis shows that there are lateral variations in the gas geochemistry in which the shale appears to be broken up into sections, some of which are more enhanced in lighter hydrocarbons relative to others. This suggests that the shale has been segregated into distinct lateral compartments bounded by permeability barriers that selectively allow the lighter and smaller gases to pass through them. Lighter hydrocarbon enhanced sections are interpreted to be areas of higher porosity and permeability. Finally, dolomite shows a positive correlation when plotted against S1 (free hydrocarbons), whereas quartz and clays show no correlation with S1, indicating that the dolomite acts as storage/accumulation sites for the hydrocarbons present within the shale. The presence of lateral reservoir compartments within the shale has significant implications regarding the way in which hydraulic fracture stimulation is done, that will help minimize costs and significantly improve production"--Abstract, leaf iii.
